Burning of the Fanos & traditional Gaitanaki
With the gaitanaki, which stands for the circle of life, the burning of the Fanos, which burns away evil, and the customary “synchoremena” — asking one another’s forgiveness — we mark the start of Lent and the end of Katerini’s carnival weekend.

The event
It always takes place on Makedonias Square and is co-organised by the Livadiotes of Katerini Association “O Georgakis Olympios” and the Municipality of Katerini, with a feast of Livadi clarinet music, traditional food and plenty of wine.
In 2026 it took place on Sunday 22 February at 19:30.
